I think the real problem is, there just aren't as many potential new
younger viewers out there to attract anymore. That's hurting even
younger-skewing networks like The CW. Instead of watching TV, young
folks born after 1985 are surfing the Internet and watching YouTube. So
young viewers represent a "negative-sum game"--CBS is competing with The
CW and the other nets to some extent, for an ever-shrinking pie.
