I think the primary reason for the change is that Burnett/CBS want more
younger viewers watching the show. CBS, as a network, does very well, but
it does well primarily with old viewers. Advertising dollars are much more
plentiful if a network can attract younger viewers so CBS has been making an
effort to replace their 'old people shows' with something that people under
35 will watch. This is a big reason why shows like Close to Home and Shark
are getting cancelled.
The problem is, CBS hasn't been able to attract younger viewers even when
trying (see Moonlight ratings). Instead, CBS is just driving away the old
folks faster by canceling their shows. I think they might have the same
problem with Survivor. Old people watch it out of habit, but will younger
people start watching Survivor in its 18th season just because a few of the
contestants (or maybe even all the contestants) are younger? I doubt it.
